Create a decorative wall with a room divider
There are many reasons to buy a room divider. Among the most popular include adding privacy and improving the overall look and feel of a particularly large room. Room dividers aren't just useful for the home, either, and can come in handy in an office environment as well.
There are three things one should look for when buying a room divider screen: first, a style that matches the tastes of its owners and the aesthetics of the room; second, materials that suit the room and the environment in which it will be used; and finally, size.
Room dividers styles to consider
There are a number of different styles consumers can choose from when selecting a room divider. Lighter designs, like rice paper or canvas, are meant to provide primarily an aesthetic feel. They're meant to act equally as a style statement and as a way to improve the dynamics of a room. Heavier materials, such as solid wood or metal, are designed to perform these functions but, if large enough, can also provide some added privacy by reducing the amount of sound that gets through to the other side of the room.
Next, you'll want to decide how large you want the room divider to be. This, of course, depends on the room in which it will be used. For high ceilings, room dividers as tall as six or seven feet can be used. But deciding on size isn't just about figuring out ideal height. Consumers will also have to determine how many panels they want in their room divider, a decision that will affect the divider's width.
Portability versus functionality
Perhaps the most important question one has to ask themselves in determining the size and material for a room divider is "do I want my room divider to be portable, or not?" If the answer is yes, then you will want to focus your attention on mostly decorative room dividers that use printed canvas, shoji, faux leather, or a Chinese lacquer. These materials are lighter and allow for a divider to be moved from room to room quickly and easily. In many cases, these materials can be used to produce a folding room divider, which can be easily moved and stored out of the way.
If you're looking for a divider to last a long time and stay in one place, you might consider more functional options, including wood and heavier fabric.
The least portable but most durable type of room divider is the sliding room divider. These kinds of dividers require installation and essentially replace doors. However, they add a unique aesthetic to any room and in small homes can actually increase living space.
